Re-baselining SKA & design reviews

Concerning SKA, earlier this year the SKA Board decided to select two complementary telescope concepts for the 650 M€ first phase of the SKA (SKA1): South Africa will host about 200 parabolic radio telescopes and Australia will host more than 100,000 ‘dipole’ antennas. This decision helps to further focus the designs for the upcoming critical design review at the end of the coming year.

At the end of April it was decided that the Jodrell Bank site in the UK will be the permanent location of the SKA headquarters. This is the outcome of a process in which both the UK and Italy put bids forward. Both decisions are important steps towards construction.
